ELECON TENNIS ACADEMY

ELECON TENNIS ACADEMY (We nurture Talent and create excellence) 2004-2005 Elecon Group of Companies has a history of encouraging sports activities and it has again proved it by taking this tradition ahead. This time it was the turn of Lawn Tennis the fastest growing Sports in India. Our CMD Mr. B.I. Patel, MD Mr. P.B. Patel & Mrs. T.P. Patel, CEO of Emtici Engg. Ltd, being sports persons themselves took a keen personal interest in the direction of introducing Lawn Tennis to the district of Anand. For the first time Elecon Group of Companies took a great initiative with a long vision, with a aim to take Tennis to the Professional level, Elecon Tennis Academy was introduced to the town of Anand. A Professional Coach with International Exposure in the field of Coaching Mr. Jigar V. Jetly (USPTR, ITF Level-I) was officially appointed for the same.

The Academy was started from April 2004 since then it has served the purpose of taking Tennis to the newer heights and still progressing to achieve the goal set for it. In the very beginning only staff members of Elecon Group and there dependents were allowed to have membership of the Academy. Initial participation was of about 20 staff members and 20 were the wards of the employee so in all there was a participation of 40 persons. After few months, outsiders i.e. persons outside of Elecon Group were allowed to avail membership of the Academy. Now it is praiseworthy that though conventionally Lawn Tennis has been considered a expensive sports but to bring it to reach of maximum people the membership fees was very nominal and affordable.

It may be noted that after this, within six months some good players were created and started participating at different State and National level Tournament. From our Academy players like Manmohan V, Madhusudan V, Sagar Panchal, Dhruv Patel, Apurva Bhatt, Eklavya Bhatt were selected for Inter School Anand District Team. Among this, for the first time, one player, Manmohan. V of our Academy was selected for the Gujarat Team which was to participate at the Nationals Tournament. Elecon Tennis Academy, within this very short period of time could organize three District level Tournament in November -04, January-05 and March-05 respectively.Elecon Tennis Academy has further plans of providing with quality infrastructure of International Standards and the project of preparing two Synthetic Courts has already been initiated. In future, the Academy plans to organize more Tournaments of State, Nationals and International Level so that the Academy touches newer heights.

Taking the tradition of encouraging sports further, Elecon Group of Companies has taken one more forward leap by full-fledgedly entering in the Field of Lawn Tennis.Personal interest taken by Mr.Prayasvinbhai Patel, Chairman, Elecon Groups of Company and Mrs. Tarunaben Patel, CEO, Emtici Engg. Ltd clearly narrates the scenario. In the year 2006-07, organizing Tournaments for different age groups was given prime importance apart from quality coaching/training to players scientifically designed to suit all players of different age group and according to the level of play.

Elecon Tennis Academy organized 4 tournaments in total which included regular knock out tournament i.e. 6th and 7th Anand District Lawn Tennis TournamentsIt was for the first time that a Masters Series Tournament was organized at the Academy in November 2006. The tournament was a huge success and the participationconfirms that. Including boys & girls about 100 players participated and about 10 groups were formed and in each group, matches were played by the system of Round Robin i.e. league system and about 195 matches in total were played. It is worth mentioning that in this tournament Mr. Prayasvinbhai Patel, CMD, Elecon Group of Companies also participated and encouraged the players.

Again, in the year 2006-07 Elecon Tennis Academy, for the first time organized Anand District Inter School Tournament in January 2007 where about 8 schools and 16 teams in total participated in the tournament. The tournament was run by the rules of Davis Cup. The Tournament proved to be good opportunity to school players. In this competition Anandalaya School emerged as champions. The winning team included Arindrajeet Ganguly, Shilp Rawal & Zubin Thakker. It was the year, where players were exposed to local tournaments and the purpose behind that was better performance in the further State and National Tournaments. at least 16 kids participated in the various State level tournaments and 10 players participated in the various National Level Tournaments.

Again it is praiseworthy that all the players have shown encouraging performance. One player Mun Amin was once finalist and thrice semifinalist in the U-10 Girls category of State Ranking Tournament. Also, Ashka Soni was thrice semifinalist. In U-12 category both the kids were quarter finalist. In U-12 (boys) category, Urmik Solanki was quarter finalist; Parsav, Rajveer, Nikhar and Arindrajeet were Pre-quarter finalist in the State Tournament. In National Level Tournament U-14 (boys) category Sarang Sharma and Kenith Shah reached 3rd round and 2nd round in the Qualifying rounds respectively. We have with us atleast 16 players of different age group ready to travel anywhere in India. for all level Tournaments. Selection for Inter-school State tournament was conducted at the Elecon Tennis Academy and students from the Academy viz Kenith Shah, Sarang Sharma, Mun Amin, Ashka Soni, Juhi Gupta and Tanvi Patel were among the selected ones.

>The training at Elecon Tennis Academy has been further enriched by introducing modern training facility and by introducing specific physical training programme designed for each group of players. Special Training programme for enhancing coordination, synchronization, balance and technical skills etc has been designed in scientific way to suit all type of players. Also, for the first time a 15 days summer camp was organized for advance players with an aim to develop the players for highest-level tournament and inject professionaism among them. The camp involved 8 hrs of rigorous training on daily basis. 22 advance players out of which 6 players were the pupil of Employee of Elecon Groups of Company, participated in the camp and availed the benefit of the international type training sessions.

Mr. Jigar V Jetly, Chief Coach, Elecon Tennis Academy, to further polish his coaching skills, attended 13th Asian Coaches Workshop held at Bangkok. Also he attended ITF Level-II course organized by AITA held at Mumbai. Future challenge includes developing advance players for better performance at National Level Tournaments and given the infrastructure and the able guidance of an Internationally recognized coach there appears no reason why players from Elecon Tennis Academy cannot perform at highest level. At present around 100 to 120 players, including all age categories are there at the Academy who are regularly trained in the Tennis Skills. Hence it is clear that the Elecon Tennis Academy is continuously marching towards progress.

TENNIS FITNESS

It may be pouring with rain, or perhaps you cannot get a court or find a good practice partner, however that does not mean that you stop working on your game!

PLAN FOR SUCCESS

Firstly, write down all those areas of your game that need more work. Give yourself a score out of 10 for each area, 10 being outstanding, 5 being average and 1 being poor. Next step is to write down what it will take to score 10 in all of these areas. If you rate yourself a 6, what will it take to get you to a 10? Talk to your coach. What would she say you need to do? What are the action steps needed to achieve a 10? You need to clearly define each and every step along the way and a target date to achieve each step. Make sure they are challenging goals that are believable and desirable. The more detailed and clear they are, the easier it will be to reach them and quicker you will get there. People with goals succeed because they know where they are going.

MAKE A SUCCESS POSTER

Make a treasure map or poster of exactly how you want to play, what you want to achieve, and how you want to look. Go through old tennis magazines and find pictures of your favourite players that reflect how you want to look on court. Add reinforcing messages that your coach may constantly tell you and good quotes to keep you focused and goal-oriented. Display it prominently in a place so you see exactly what you want to achieve everyday.

BECOME AN ACTOR

Your thoughts, feelings and actions all affect one another. If you act confidently, you feel confident. Try walking tall, with your head and shoulders back and a spring in your step. It is hard to feel down. Your body language can be used in many ways: to help rid you of negative emotions like fear and discouragement; to intimidate your opponent and show her what a fighter you are; as well as to demonstrate your confidence and composure. However like all actors, you must rehearse and practice. And don’t wait until you are on stage (court) to do it. It takes practice and lots of it. Practice in your own home in front of the mirror, walking tall around the house, pumping your fist. Your script is to exude confidence, positive energy, calmness, fight, and determination. Picture in your mind the type of player you want to be and begin acting like that player. Have fun practicing and you will learn to be a winner both on and off the court.

CATCH YOUR THOUGHTS

Whilst sitting around home, catch your thoughts… what are you thinking? Are you occasionally negative; do you doubt yourself? To think like a winner, you must be positive all the time. The conversations you have with yourself (often referred to as self-talk) are crucial for moulding attitudes and beliefs. What you focus on is what you get. For self talk to be of benefit, you must learn to control it all the time, not just on the court. We are exactly what we think we are. Great players learn to control their self-talk so it is only filled with positive statements. Challenge yourself to greatness. Compliment yourself regularly and acknowledge what you are doing daily. Most importantly, speak to yourself like you mean it, full of energy and vibrancy! Stronger the feeling, greater the excitement and energy and the quicker the manifestation. Speak with confidence to create it on and off the court.

PLAY ON CUE - USE CUE WORDS

When you can’t get on court, a great way of practicing is to shadow strokes, preferably in front of a mirror or a window where you can check your form. For each stroke, select a cue word. Get your coach to help you choose the best word for you for each particular stroke. For example, it could be early, low, dynamic, or feet. Practice playing the strokes and saying the cue words. This is a useful way of focusing or re-focusing when concentration is broken during a match. It’s an exercise that is ideal for a rainy day or as a warm-up.

NOW

You know you have to play in the now and not think about past mistakes and get angry with yourself, or think about winning and then choke. But how do you do that? One of the best ways to practice the maintenance of moment-by-moment focus during a match is to learn meditation, yoga or deep breathing. This is a learned skill – just like your forehand and must be practiced regularly for best results. You’ll be amazed at how much better you can concentrate and relax on court.

MAKE A TAPE

A great way to mentally prepare off the court is to make a tape of about five of your favorite songs that stimulate the feelings of confidence and enjoyment. Your aim is to trigger the way you want to feel when you play your best tennis. Once a tape is made, listen to it several times a week – on your way to tennis, in the car, on planes – and visualise playing outstanding tennis whilst listening to the music. Become so familiar with the music that whenever you listen to it or play the song in your head, you trigger your ideal performance state. Have fun with it. It is a great way to mentally prepare for your matches.

DON’T PHONE HOME – PHONE YOU!

If you are lucky enough to have one of those mobile phones that take movies or pictures, use them as part of your pre-match preparation. Take photos of exactly what you want to look like on the court – intense, aggressive, calm, focused – whatever the look, photograph or video it and watch yourself performing exactly as you wish. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Create those perfect images in your mind first and then create them on court.

IN CONCLUSION

Mentally preparing for a match is much like going to the gym to do fitness training. You can’t get physically fit in a weekend. You need to keep going back to build up your emotional muscles! Success depends on spaced repetition and regular immersion, to help you fully integrate these powerful techniques into your life. Make good habits and they will make you.
